So About That New Warhammer Fantasy RPG

By Christopher Pye at 2009-10-26 – 5:32:31 | Comments (11) |

I like Dark Heresy, that’s a given. I liked how the most recent edition of Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play is mechanically similar to Dark Heresy. I’ve never played WHFRP though. When I heard that Fantasy Flight Games had announced a new edition of WHFRP at GenCon, I was pretty stoked. “If they cut some of the cruft that I saw in the WHFRP 2nd ed. rulebook, my friends and I will probably give it a go.”

Well, there’s good news! FFG is holding a pre-release event with an introductory adventure, “A Day Late, a Shilling Short.” Awesome! Did you click on that link? Did you see the accompanying image? Here, let me help.

just... just WTF, FFG? WTF!? (image copyright Fantasy Flight Games)

just... just WTF, FFG? WTF!?

I’m speechless. What’s the point of all this stuff? This isn’t a role-playing game, it’s a role-playing game plus a lot of stuff that’s almost-guaranteed to complicate things.

Is there any point to all of this other than the faint hope that we’ll lose some pieces and need to purchase replacements? Will those special dice add anything to the game that normal dice couldn’t accomplish along with a table? And don’t tell me you don’t like tables — I’ve played Dark Heresy. You freakin’ love tables. It’s almost as though this RPG was engineered with the intention of selling as many superfluous accessories as possible. Kinda reminds me of a certain popular fantasy RPG that also recently saw the release of a new edition.

You know what? I take that last statement back. That particular game just encourages the use of plastic minis — it didn’t add loads of tokens, special dice, and cards from a UFS-style card game.

Hopefully they’ll have this demo at my local Comics-and-Games store. I’ll want to see, in-person, what all this stuff is for.

New Rogue Trader Character Sheets

Rogue Trader Character SheetLike a papyrus zombie, my character sheets have returned! Why settle for those fancy official character sheets that burn through your ink, and don’t even have the decency to make optimal use of the space on the page? Perhaps a more practical character sheet is in order!

CBPye’s Rogue Trader Character Sheet

It uses a landscape layout, no color, and unlike my Dark Heresy character sheet, this one requires only one fold, down the middle. Sadly, I didn’t have the space on this one for the handy quick-reference section*. Consider this sheet a rough draft. Print it, try it out, take it to a few sessions, and come back to comment and tell me what you and your group think about it.

*UPDATE – quick reference added after, oh, two seconds of work. WTF was I thinking.

Rogue Trader Character Generator Update

By Christopher Pye at 2009-10-21 – 5:29:07 | Comments (2) |

You can have a look at the Rogue Trader Character Generator here. I guess you could call this a milestone, albeit a small one. All of the data regarding character generation (aside from items and psychic-specific stuff) has been entered in. All that remains now is actually getting everything working properly and tidied up.

What does work currently:

  • Random generation of characteristic scores and wounds.
  • Ability to reroll one (and only one) characeristic score.
  • Ability to select an origin path. This is not pretty at all.
  • The “Start Over” button.

What doesn’t work currently:

  • Randomizers
  • Fate Points, Insanity, and corruption
  • Addition and calculation of characteristic bonuses from the origin path.
  • It looks HORRIBLE.
  • Pretty much everything else, yeah.

It’s gonna take some time, but I’m committed to eventually cranking out a solid chargen with online storage capabilities. Expect a customized Rogue Trader character sheet sometime within the next week, and shortly after that a ship randomizer. Stay tuned!

I Need a Google Wave Invitation

By Christopher Pye at 2009-10-19 – 17:35:08 | Comments (0) |

Google finally launched the developer preview of Wave, and I had the grave misfortune to not receive an invitation. Reading Wyatt’s post on using wave to play D&D reminded me of why I wanted to get in on that preview in the first place: the chance to write some tools for a web-based collaborative editor. Sadly, Wyatt has no invitations of his own to had out (and I understand he’s been swamped with requests for one). If you, dear reader, have a Google Wave invite and you absolutely must find someone to give it to, do consider chris.pye@gmail.com.

Review: Rogue Trader

Rogue Trader is here, and the lot of you interstellar rapscallions can thank my friend Dylan for loaning me his shiny new book for a bit. I’ve got it so that I can make a half-assed character generator, but I might as well go ahead and review it while I’m at it. Four-hundred pages of intergalactic gallivanting await! Read More »
