If you would still like to keep playing D&D once in a while, I could recommend you to play 3rd ed. but in the Dragonlance setting. I consider it a low-fantasy setting (at least during the first levels), specially with 3rd edition rules (or even AD&D).

As for your reviews, well.. I really liked your input (both the positive and negative), but if you’re not really enjoying it anymore (playing and reviewing it) then you made the right choice. One is supposed to play (or direct) to have fun, and that’s the n° 1 priority. There’s a hole world of role playing games out there, and you should find the one that you enjoy most.

Have you taken a look at any of the old school retro-clones? Swords & Wizardy, OSRIC, and Labyrinth Lord all hit a lot of the points on your list — very dangerous at low levels, magic items are special, PCs have to earn their power, and they’re all pretty much set for “swords & sorcery” by default.

I will note, though, that these games don’t come with much in the way of setting, and they do require a fair amount of referee decision-making to handle what a lot of games would handle by setting up rules. Which I love, because it speeds up the game and lets me put my mark on it, but I know it’s not necessarily everyone’s cup of tea.

Two words for you: Burning Wheel.
Once you get beyond the learning curve (because it’s a different type of game, not because it’s impossible), it’s just FULL of awesome, especially for gritty, swords & sorcery type fantasy.

Yep. It sounds like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is right up your street. It ticks all of your wishlist and is one superb, highly rated but sadly underplayed game. It’s nasty, visceral, low-fantasy at its nasty, visceral, low-fantasy best.
